Has The Hills Gone…Downhill?

Posted by thelanetrain on October 24, 2008

It’s still the number one show on MTV, but chances are, you’ve probably been skipping The Hills to watch actual scripted teenage drama.  Yes, there are definite signs that the juggernaut of all reality shows is slowly backsliding like the folks on Celebrity Rehab.  In this post, I’ll try to explain some of the unsettling omens that the fantasy playworld of Lauren, Whitney, Heidi and Audrina may soon cease to exist.

TRL, Shoutouts to MAH GIRRRRL, SHANIQUA IN WEST PLAINFIELD!!! WOOOO!!!, to Cease in November

Posted by thelanetrain on September 16, 2008

No, it’s really true.  For reals yo.  As if today couldn’t get any worse, MTV announced that it would put TRL on hiatus on it’s tenth anniversary in November (producer Dave Sirulnick gives some sort of logical explanation to this, but like a facebook relationship, its complicated).  This makes me really sad, because I personally wanted to be among the throng of screaming high school kids making who shouted “wooooooo!” every time a camera passed by them.  But the show, which in all honesty was getting lackluster ratings and losing its popularity to other shows, needed to be put down like Old Yeller.  I think MTV got the message that nobody was watching TV after school anymore ever since sidekicks, texting, and crackblackberries started ruling the tween and teenage world.  Plus, if a pop act was going to make it big, a MySpace campaign or facebook group could do so much more than some two-bit TV appearance with this dude.

I just want to know: will we go all retro and see Carson Daly hosting with special guests Backstreet Boys and Eminem?  I hope so, yes.

Don’t Even Bother Calling Your Girlfriend Tonight

Posted by thelanetrain on September 1, 2008

Ah Labor Day, the last unofficial day of summer and time of the year when its acceptable to wear white.   But this Labor Day is somewhat of a big deal for the folks over at the CW.  That’s because tonight marks the season premiere of Gossip Girl, the CW’s highly hyped teen soap based upon the popular book series (people still read books, you know).  While the anticipated second season is riding high on the show’s permeance of current pop culture, the main challenge will be whether or not its ratings can match its reputation.  But odds are that the millions of viewers who tune in each week to see either Blair and Serena’s latest tiffs and squabbles, the incredible clothes that these so-called teenagers can afford to wear/buy, or just to people watch don’t care about what Nielsen thinks.  Even if the storyline seems convoluted and trite, GG is likely here to stay.  No amount of OMFG is ever too much to satisfy the palates of eager 16-24 year-olds.

Couple that season premiere with the toss up of staying on CW to watch One Tree Hill (which in my opinion is due for its end very soon) or The Hills on MTV (LAUREN: Oh my god Lo, like, why?  LO: I mean, like, Lauren, I don’t know) and its pretty much girls night on TV.  Let the estrogen floweth over.

Heidi and Spencer to Open Bar in Manhattan, Spencer Won’t Attend Unless He Pays Himself Club Fees

Posted by thelanetrain on August 29, 2008

The new season of The Hills is only two episodes in, but there’s already bi-coastal drama unfolding.  Unfortunately, it’s not going to play out on the small screen…yet.  According to Gawker and W (from which this lovely picture came), real people Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are apparently opening a bar, oh excuse me, “upscale sports lounge” in Manhattan’s Murray Hill.  And in a Martha Stewart-esque move to completely synergize their lifestyle into a brand, they are naming the bar “The Hill”.  I swear to god I am not making this shit up.

Unfortunately, The Hill is still under construction, as the picture clearly shows.  Too bad the Real World crew from Brooklyn can’t party there yet.  But, like, whatevs, the place will no doubt be crawling with bros, or rather, “brahs”, and hot Heidi look-a-likes, like NYC celebutard Tinsley Mortimer.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Whitney Port Hills spinoff follows Whitneys totally real, unscripted life as she mysteriously ends up at The Hill night after night after nifght…

VMAs Apparently a Big Deal This Year

Posted by thelanetrain on August 15, 2008

The VMAs are coming.  What?  Oh yeah, that show on MTV they rerun like six million times where they give out awards to people.  Remember last year when Britney “performed” Gimme More and danced around like an overweight sorority girl after having one too many at the frat house?  Apparently, this article shows how Britney (who is now on the verge of making a major comeback) got nominated for video of the year, along with teen pop sensation The Jonas Brothers.  Oh, and some other bands too.

But the article has really got me thinking.  They still make music videos?  Weird…

Real Worlders Finally Descend on Brooklyn. Everybody Hide!

Posted by thelanetrain on August 15, 2008

This picture from Newyorkology shows a bunch of faux-hipsters walking down some abaonded Red Hook street with a camera crew guiding them along the way, and clearly, it appears to be the Real World Brooklyn crew.  Gawker has some lovely cast bios on each of the seven drunk therapy cases housemates and provides insight into what they’ve done so far during their stay.  Predictably, they go clubbing, barhopping, they meet/talk to/fuck the locals (and each other), and it appears that for the most part, the picture above and the ones on the linked site are some of the only times you will be able to see them sober.  Personally, its always gratifying to see how they film those “walking” shots (as these photos explain).

I’m not sure how long they’ll be in town for, but if anyone runs into one these seven strangers picked to live in a house together, contact me!

Result from Upcoming “From G’s to Gents” Leaked on Wikipedia, but Nobody Cares

Posted by thelanetrain on August 4, 2008

Taken from the Wikipedia article on the aforementioned show, this chart shows tomorrow night’s episode results today.

But judging from the amount of press the show’s been getting (none), my excitement for it (minimal), and the general response (dismal), does anyone really care?

I challenge Wikipedia to put up every episode’s results, and put these poor viewers out of their misery.

Real World Will Cement Red Hook as New York’s Scariest Neighborhood

Posted by thelanetrain on July 23, 2008

Yes, yes, we all know that MTV’s stupid drunk juggernaut The Real World is going to be in Brooklyn very soon, but like, stuff keeps happening, you know?  At first, the Real Worlders were going to be living in an exclusive Brooklyn Heights penthouse loft, but according to Gawker, renovations were coming along a little too slow for the producers’ tastes, so they decided to move the cast to a giant pier building in an up-and-coming neighborhood that’s getting gentrified by the minute: Red Hook.  So the lovable neighborhood that was once home to stevedores, hookers, and underground drug trafficking is now home to an Ikea, Fairway, and soon, seven drunk twenty somethings who love to bitch and fight.  Sweet.

Confirmed: “From G’s to Gents” is Really Really Boring

Posted by thelanetrain on July 23, 2008

So last night I caught the second episode of MTV’s From G’s to Gents, against my better wishes.  In this episode, the G’s learned fashion tips and put on a runway show to display certain looks for different social functions (sorta like this show, with less pretense).  Then, the Fonz elminated two completely likeable (by both audience and contestant standards) Gs.  Mikey P, because this “wannabe” was really a gent all along (Fonsworth cited his car, motorcycle, and four bedroom house as dubious factors), and Zenel, because he also had everything going for him (apparently he’s an actor slash model). Even though over half the house voted for Kesan to go home, Bentley kept him in the game because he “really needed this”.  Whatever, you know its really because this show couldn’t be any more boring and you had to keep the most troublesome characters in the game (example: Mikey P and Zenel were keeping to themselves while the rest of the cast was caught on tape screaming, yelling, causing fights, starting drama, so typical of MTV).

Next week looks vaguely promising: they all wear matching sweater vests, learn to play cricket, play basketball in said outfits against a bunch of thugs, and Kesan tries to run away!  But to be honest, this show is kind of a bore.  I didn’t even care about anything until the end of the episode.  Could the writers and producers at least try to spice things up?  Even a little bit?  And can someone make this show a little more convincing?  I think Creepa could be replaced with Lil’ John and nobody would really know the difference.

And While We’re On The Subject, Here’s The Trailer For The Hills: Season 4

Posted by thelanetrain on July 22, 2008

I couldn’t help but post this after seeing it first on MTV, then again all over the internets.  It looks like a real-life movie!  With scripts!  Sometimes it’s hard to realize that these people are real people, and not actors.  Oh wait…

But from what I could tell, this season has (predictably) so much drama!  Brody Jenner (he’s not a real person anymore) goes to jail!  A love interest for Whitney! Heidi and Spencer bitch and fight at restaurants! Audrina and Justin Bobby have drama! Lo (who?) shakes things up!

Best part: Watch for LC’s incredibly well timed mascara-infused tears at 1:47.

This is the definition of ridiculousness.

UPDATE 7/23: Another great moment I just noticed: at 1:27, where LC belts out the oh so tired cliché, “This is the part where we need to make an effort,” and puts her hands up in her hair.  Seriously, they could not have hired better people to write the show.
