This Just In: People Are Watching Gossip Girl

Posted by thelanetrain on September 23, 2008

Spotted: A surefire sign that Gossip Girl will be ruling the airwaves for a few more seasons.  Entertainment Weekly reported that the teen soap which runs on the CW reported a series high rating of 3.7 million viewers last week.  Not only that, but the show helped the CW become TV’s #1 network for women and adults aged 18-34 that night.

So what exactly has been happening on the juicy show that the kids can’t seem to stop talking about?  The kids are back for their senior year of high school, but not without some fun in the sun, Hamptons style.  We see Nate and some MILF playing around while toying with Vanessa’s emotions, Blair fawning over some rich Lord guy, and Dan and Serena on and off and on and off again.  Chuck is wallowing away in sorrow over his inability to keep Blair, Jenny’s been overworked at her internship with Blair’s mom and Lily is unhappy with her marriage to Bart Bass.  Oh, and Rufus has a new love?

Can’t wait to see what happens next week

Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Lehman, AIG To Be Investigated by FBI

Posted by thelanetrain on September 23, 2008

Reuters reported today that the FBI will be investigating Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Lehman Brothers, and AIG, including senior staff, to see if insiders within the companies provided misinformation to investors about the mortgage and credit crisis situations.  The FBI will also be on the lookout for any instances of corporate fraud within these companies.

Thank. The. Fucking. Gods.  There is justice in this cruel sick country of ours.

Clay Aiken Successfully Distracts America From Dying Economy

Posted by thelanetrain on September 23, 2008

Well America, we finally found a way to take our minds off of the second great depression.  In what could be described as the biggest “No shit, sherlock” moment of the year, Clay Aiken, the androgynous bespectacled runner-up from the second season of American Idol is totally gay.  Who knew, right?  Did anyone really not see this coming?  Even after this shocker from waaaay back?  The story, which will be carried by People Magazine (above) has generated a resounding “finally!” from all of the webernets, including fellow gay Perez Hilton, who merely said:

“Welcome to the gayborhood, daddy!”

We’re so proud of you, Clay.  Now if only that other really famous gay celebrity will follow your lead…

Gawker Totally Pwns Palin Family

Posted by thelanetrain on September 18, 2008

If there was any doubt that the editors over at Gawker have an agenda in this political election, we clearly know who they’re rooting for (or rather, who they’re rooting against).  Aside from the daily headlines slamming McCain and the MILF, the NY-bassed Gossip and Media rag came out on the offensive against the Palin Clan, and in particular, their pleasantly pregnant daughter Bristol.  First, they reported that B-Pal (I love that name) smoked pot on camera while smiling (damn how I wish they had a funny video to go along with that) and was apparently dubbed “the makeout queen” of her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska.  Then, they later got a hold of Bristol’s private voicemail greeting (not so scandalous, but more like, how the hell did they get that?).

But the big story?  Somebody hacked into Sarah Palin’s personal Yahoo account and exposed all of her private emails.  Awesome.  Vultures need not be interested though, as the post contains mostly benign email messages, and silly pictures of family members being all goofy with Trig, the Downs Syndrome Baby.  Although the government did react violently and call the leak a huge breach of privacy, which I guess it is.  But you know what else is a huge breach of privacy?  This thing (which a lot of GOP members support, like this guy).  I mean, as long as she has nothing to hide, what does it matter.  She’s not a terrorist, right?  Right?

For all those still wondering, they changed her password like totes ASAP so nobody could read her private emails anymore.  I don’t know about you, but I’d be lookin’ out for her, Dubya.  She’s suspicious…

TRL, Shoutouts to MAH GIRRRRL, SHANIQUA IN WEST PLAINFIELD!!! WOOOO!!!, to Cease in November

Posted by thelanetrain on September 16, 2008

No, it’s really true.  For reals yo.  As if today couldn’t get any worse, MTV announced that it would put TRL on hiatus on it’s tenth anniversary in November (producer Dave Sirulnick gives some sort of logical explanation to this, but like a facebook relationship, its complicated).  This makes me really sad, because I personally wanted to be among the throng of screaming high school kids making who shouted “wooooooo!” every time a camera passed by them.  But the show, which in all honesty was getting lackluster ratings and losing its popularity to other shows, needed to be put down like Old Yeller.  I think MTV got the message that nobody was watching TV after school anymore ever since sidekicks, texting, and crackblackberries started ruling the tween and teenage world.  Plus, if a pop act was going to make it big, a MySpace campaign or facebook group could do so much more than some two-bit TV appearance with this dude.

I just want to know: will we go all retro and see Carson Daly hosting with special guests Backstreet Boys and Eminem?  I hope so, yes.

Fuck You, Los Angeles Times

Posted by thelanetrain on September 15, 2008

Guess who’s having the biggest comeback of her career?  That’s right, this person is.  With the paparazzi no longer treating her like a piece of meat, her life in check, and after a stellar appearance at the VMAs, the pop princess will surely reclaim her spot on the A-list as a recording artist.  So why is the LA Times still calling her “troubled” and writing about her like she’s still boozing every night until 3?  No idea.  Hey editors of Soundboard:  you should really watch this.

Viral Video: The Palin/Clinton Sketch

Posted by thelanetrain on September 15, 2008

So Saturday Night Live premiered this weekend with guest host Michael Phelps (he won 8 gold medals at the Beijing Games, remember?).  But that’s not the special guest most people were talking about come Sunday and Monday.  Phelps’ acting chops (best summarized by his inability to memorize lines and proof that he should stick to swimming) were completey upstaged by Tina Fey‘s appearance as VP nominee Sarah Palin in the show’s opening sketch.  In this five minute comedic blockbuster (with Amy Poehler as Hillary), SNL proves that they still have the potential to be really fucking funny.  Too bad the rest of the show was utterly forgettable.

Now if anyone can tell me what a flurge is, that’d be awesome.

O Hai, Did Ur Money Die Today?

Posted by thelanetrain on September 15, 2008

So unless you’ve been living under a rock, a member of some Mideast Oligarchy, or part of the production staff of SNL, then you probably already know that today might has well been called “Clusterfuck Monday”.  It started off this weekend as Lehman Brothers, one of the world’s leading investment banks and repository of six-figure earning white collar douchebags, failed to find a sucker peer institution to save it from total collapse and instead filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  As if that wasn’t bad enough, Bank of America bought Merrill Lynch for a mere $50 billion, and essentially turned precious, precious Lynch stock into worthless sheets of paper.  Even worse, this all comes off the news that Washington Mutual’s stock fell below $2 per share at the end of last week and is seeking a $4.5 billion loan for its reserves, and AIG is scrambling to restructure itself after its stock value was more than halved on Friday. So there’s no way this can get any worse.

Yes it can.

So how much damage was inflicted on the markets today?  The closing bell hasn’t rung yet, but so far, things are shitty.  The Dow dropped over 400 points and already both candidates are pointing fingers.  It’s an all out panic as investors are in a tizzy and volumes of precious stock and mutual funds are slowly turning into worthless piles of financial jargon.

On the flipside, at least the Coen Brothers are happy…

And Now for Something Not Election Related

Posted by thelanetrain on September 9, 2008

Hi faithful readers!

I know I haven’t posted in about a week or so, maybe because I’m still trying to deal with all the Palin fever.  But to break the dry spell that I’m sure has been bothering you all (and myself included), I’ve decided to post something not related to politics.  At all.

So in the vein of last week’s post on TV shows your girlfriend will be glued to come Monday, add this one to the register.  Oh wait, it’s not even on TV.  Oh wait, the main star isn’t even an actress (sort of).

The latest hyped up “OMG DRAMA” serial is Sorority Forever, a web-series on (because where else are you going to put those reruns of The Steve Harvey Show, Family Matters, and Sister Sister?).  All in all it looks like a clone of Greek, except with hotter, bitchier, sluttier sorostitutes.  And who is the star that looks so familiar but you just can’t place her?  Why, it’s former interneterweb sensation Lonelygirl15, who is making a stab at legitimate acting, even if it is in her native medium.

Oh, and isn’t it cute that the show’s logo uses a Greek letter?  OMG Awesome!
