Mary-Kate Olsen: Actress, Socialite, Pusher?

Posted by thelanetrain on August 5, 2008

Everyone knows how crazy the Olsen Twins are, or really, how crazy Mary-Kate Olsen has been lately.  When we last saw her, she was locking lips onscreen with Sir Ben Kingsley in “some little indie film that nobody’s gonna see“.  Now she’s being shoved back into the media circus again, but this time, as suspect #1 in the investigation of Heath Ledger’s death.  FOR REAL?  What would Danny Tanner say?

After The Jump: Immunity, OxyContin, and why MKO is under fire.

The story was first reported in The New York Post a couple days ago.  According to the article, Olsen refuses to be interrogated about Heath Ledger’s unexpected death earlier this year unless she receives immunity from the prosecution.  Apparently, at the time of Ledger’s death, Olsen was one of the first to be notified, apparently because the two actors were close friends.  However, feds investigating the case suspect their friendship was based on the fact that Olsen supplied Ledger with the necessary drugs that caused his overdose and death.

Olsen’s lawyer offered this statement to the press in regards to her defense:

“Despite tabloid speculation, Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger’s home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them…we have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger’s death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed.”

Nice words from legal, but if Olsen is so innocent, why would she refuse to help out without getting immunity?  Even Michelle Williams, Ledger’s ex, is going above and beyond to help out with the investigation.

“Everyone has been very eager to help, saying what a great guy Heath Ledger was, everyone except Mary-Kate, who has refused to speak.”

Hmmm…the plot thickens.

Late yesterday, The Associated Press released an article also addressing Olsen’s refusal to participate in the investigation, this time warning of a subpoena that could be issued against her if she refuses to talk.  Olsen’s lawyers continued to defend her and protest any allegations of her knowing about the source of Ledger’s drugs.  Meanwhile, DEA officials continue to suspect that OxyContin and Vicodin were the two prime causes of Ledger’s overdose, and that they were obtained illegally via Olsen, who was called four times within the first 10 minutes of Ledger’s discovered death.

Finally today, Olsen announced that she didn’t give Ledger any drugs and had nothing to do whatsoever with his death.  Even though she is speaking through her attorneys, Olsen is still being as uncooperative as ever and at this point, demands immunity.  Could she be subpoenaed and have to testify?  Of course, and it will most likely happen, as the DEA isn’t taking the stalemate lightly.  Olsen’s lawyers are commending her, saying that she’s merely protecting her rights.  But if Olsen has nothing to hide, why would she be so uptight about not wanting to help find out who killed one of her closest friends?

Celebrities are a strange, strange breed, aren’t they?
