It’s been a banner day for The Lane Train, and its not even over yet.  We thought that getting 130 something hits a day last week was a huge accomplishment, but it’s virtually nothing compared to this.  The picture below represents our traffic over the last two weeks.  In this one day alone, we had over 3500 hits, and we’ve nearly increased our total blog hits by ten-fold.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our readers and viewers!!!

UPDATE 9:47 PM:  Our official end of the day count for today was 4,559 hits!  Incredible!

A Busy, Busy Day for Disney

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

The Walt Disney Company is having quite a day today, and not necessarily in a good or bad way.  To start, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Disney is in talks with Veoh Networks to allow for the streaming video service to air ABC and ESPN programming via its website.  So now, you can watch all your favorite episodes of Desperate Housewives and get the latest MLB scores without having to buy overpriced iTunes episodes or check scores through Yahoo! Sports.  Awesome!

Furthermore, Disney also sold its online movie tickets site, movies.com, to Comcast.  According to eFluxMedia, Comcast, which owns Fandango, finally acquired the Disney-owned site after a number of unsuccessful offers to buy the service.  In addition, Comcast hopes to increase visitors on both websites, and to increase its overall revenue via online advertising and ticket processing fees.

Honestly, we don’t care what happens to our movie ticketing sites that still shock us when prime tickets cost ten dollars, but please, for the love of god, do not give the paper bag mascots any of those insanely annoying Mickey Mouse ears.

Boring, Insufferable Bonehead to Join Other Boring, Insufferable Boneheads

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

Recent reality show reject Tinsley Mortimer will get her second chance at TV fame when she appears in a cameo on Gossip Girl this fall. According to Just Jared, Mortimer was spotted in The Hamptons with co-stars Blake Lively and Taylor Momsen wearing similar white dresses, all going to the show’s set this morning. No news about the character she will be playing, but probably someone rich, famous, and vapid. In our humble opinion, she is nowhere near as good looking as last season’s celebrity socialite cameo.

“The Hills” To Get Spin-Off, More Boring

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

Oh man, don’t you just love watching The Hills? Wish there was a way you could watch even more of the show that shows virtually nothing except young L.A. twenty-somethings eating at fancy restaurants, getting drunk, and fighting with their friends and boyfriends? Well now you can!

This story is a few weeks old, but Reality TV World reported that MTV is getting ready to produce a reality show for Hills’ perennial questions-asker Whitney Port (who, oddly enough, seems like the sanest of the bunch). According to the article, the show would focus on Whitney’s new job at PR firm People’s Revolution in New York while befriending a bunch of rich, popular New York socialites. Sounds an awful lot like this show, except Whitney can actually hold a job (hard to believe, but its true). Plus, since she always asks a ton of questions, I’m sure she’ll get herself into plenty of NYC style drama and hijinks.

For now though, Whitney and the gang have been busy filming Season 4 of The Hills, which premieres in August on MTV. Like, OMG!

Best. Headline. Ever.

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

Fox News reported this headline today:

God Busted on Cocaine Charges Near Florida Church

Apparently, a man by the name of God Lucky Howard (awesome!) sold cocaine to undercover cops in his neighborhood and was later found with 22 grams of the stuff and scale at his Tampa, Florida home. Plus, he was dealing right by a local church and school. We’d totes make an Amy Winehouse joke right about now, but it’s just not appropriate.

This item, however, apparently happened minutes after Satan donated $100,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network.

“Smart” Comedy Wins Weekend Box Office, But No Love For “Guru”

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

As predicted, Get Smart was the number one movie this weekend, raking in over $39 million in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. But the real story is that Mike Myers’ The Love Guru didn’t even crack the top three spots in its’ opening weekend, making Steve Carrell the clear comedy winner. “Guru” finished fourth and grossed only $14 million on its first weekend. Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda finished second, grossing over $21 million in its second weekend and has made over $155 million overall. Lastly, The Incredible Hulk was third, grossing about $21 million, and has made roughly $96 million overall.

George Carlin Dies at 71 (UPDATE)

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

It’s a very sad day for comedy as legendary comedian and all around funny man George Carlin died last night at the age of 71. According to AFP, Carlin died after checking into a hospital in Santa Monica, CA while complaining of chest pains. The comedian also had a history of heart problems. The star of many HBO specials and the four-time Grammy winner will always be remembered as the sharp-tongued comic who had a unique, tell-it-like-it-is style and stunned audiences with his hit performance “Seven Words That Can Never Be Said On Television.”

Weekend Wrapup – Successes and Failures

Posted by thelanetrain on June 23, 2008

This weekend was pretty relaxed.  Friday night was chill as I saw my friend Nate who I hadn’t seen since last summer and had dinner at this pretty so-so Japanese place on the Upper West Side.  The highlight of the night was a neurotic old woman started asking us to move so we could accommodate her party of ten or whatever.  And when the waitstaff wanted to move us to the back of the restaurant, she goes, “No, you don’t want to sit back there, do you?”  Frankly, I couldn’t give a damn.

On Saturday I ran…a lot.  Started the morning off right by running around the Central Park reservoir, running errands, etc…  Then I met Ari, his girl Shauna, and her lil’ sis (in her sorority) for some shopping along Fifth Avenue.  After that, I came home and ran some more (on a treadmill this time) before meeting them and Ari’s roommate at Johnny Utah’s.  I was pretty impressed by the proper southern/wild west theme.  They had a private dining room that looked like it was inside a bank vault.  And, they have a mechanical bull in the middle of the main dining room!  Too bad the food was mediocre and overpriced, but I guess that’s what happens when you pay for the atmosphere and the gimmicks.  Afterwards we went back downtown to Ari’s place, hung out some more, and then met Kristen and Jeremy on the pier at the seaport for some drinks overlooking Lower Manhattan.  It was nice way to end the evening.

Sunday my Dad came in and we tried to go to Ikea Brooklyn, but it was impossible.  There was traffic (bumper-to-bumper, and barely moving) along all the local side streets leading up to the store.  We couldn’t even make it to the parking lot!  So we turned around and headed to Target instead.  Then I came home, prepared for a long week of work ahead, and went to sleep.

But the best news this weekend is that a lot of you loyal readers must have been telling your friends about the blog, because somehow, our daily hits have gone way up!  We had more visitors to our site on Saturday than in our entire first two weeks, and on Sunday we finally reached over 1,000 daily hits!  We couldn’t have done this without you, the loyal viewers, and we hope you continue to visit the blog.  It’s gonna be a busy week ahead, I can tell, so keep coming back for more pop culture, entertainment, and odd news!
